A Rose By Any Other Name: Changing the Title

Updated: Apr 30

How often do writers change the title of their novels prior to publication? Without outside influence from publishers or editors, of course.

It's something I've often wondered about. Prior to landing on The Lady of Worlds as the official title of my novel I affectionately referred to it by the bland, if to the point, title Celestial Maiden. It is a title that can only refer to one character, whereas The Lady of Worlds could, in theory, refer to several different characters depending on your point of view. Of course, I have a specific character in mind when I think of the title, but that's a secret.

So, what's in a name? How do writers settle on a title?
